This past weekend we enjoyed the Blossom Fest in Sister Bay. We had our annual childrens parade (actually, anyone who wanted to walk in the parade is welcome to do so!) to the park and the Lykkeringen Norwegian Dancers again treated us to music and dance in the park around the maypole. The Taste of Sister Bay was held in the Village Hall and a bonfire was held at 8:00 PM Saturday night. It was a HUGE bonfire, and a good thing too as it was really cold!
Next weekend is Memorial Day weekend, a traditional start to the summer season. We are hoping for lots of visitors. The gas price situation is not helping any, but do remember that for most vehicles and areas in the Midwest, you can reach Door County with one tank of gas. As Ole says to Lena "I don't care what the price of gas is, I only put in $5.00 anyvays!" Also, our Cafe Custard will be open for its second season from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM every day through Labor Day.
The latest news from Sister Bay is that the Village has purchased Helms 4 Seasons Resort and will be tearing it down to open up the waterfront to the public with the eventual plan of offering a walking path all the way through town along the water. The old Hendrickson house (the empty house standing across the road from the Cafe) has been torn down. At this point, we do not know the plans for the lot. It should be an interesting summer!!
And so it ends in a bang... October 27, 2006, 2:29 pm
Fall is many things in Door County, Wisconsin - colorful, crunchy leaves, crisp apples, smoke scented evening air, Halloween and Thanksgiving. Here in Sister Bay it is also FALL FEST, a yearly celebration of the end of the season.
Fall Fest originally began in the 40's, when the season ran from May 30 thru Labor Day. The locals all got together to eat, drink and celebrate making through another season. Through the years, Fall Fest was celebrated with a parade, a small carnival, a play put on by the Lions club, and the different service organizations selling beer, brats, corn and other treats. Now, with the season running from early May through October and winter weekends, Fall Fest continues to be a reason to celebrate with parades, fun food booths, kids activities and an arts and crafts show and finally, on Sunday afternoon the dropping of the ping pong balls from the helicopter. Some of those ping pong balls have prizes written on them, so it is a very well attended affair.
Here at Sister Bay Cafe, we set up a Lapskaus and beer booth with coffee, and hot chocolate. Lapskaus is a Norwegian potato stew made with potatoes (650 pounds!!) ham (350 pounds), onion (150 pounds) and pepper (to taste). Our Moegenburg cousins, Laurie, GB, Clay, and Phil, son Eric (tongue sticking out) friend Ann, and Carol Smith along with son-in-law Bryan are pictured in the Viking hats, working the booth. Sara and Hanna are out in the street waiting for the helicopter and sisters Lisa and Maia are taking a break from the festivities.. Fall Fest is always held the weekend after Columbus Day, so circle your calendars for next year!
